Fostering a Sustainable Environment

Third Sector New England’s NonProfit Center demonstrates its commitment to social justice, community, intergenerational equity and financial responsibility through environmental management.

The NonProfit Center’s building was originally constructed in 1899 as a cornerstone for Boston’s Leather District. The center’s building is recognized by the Massachusetts Historical Society for its historically significant architecture.

In the early stages of planning, Third Sector New England determined that it was a priority for the NonProfit Center to utilize environmentally preferable materials, designs, and technologies. Balancing the need for preservation and the need for “green” updates, Third Sector New England developed the NonProfit Center considerately utilizing environmentally-preferable materials whenever possible.

As a sign of initial success, the NonProfit Center received the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification through the Commercial Interiors Program in August 2006. While achieving this certification was certainly cause for celebration, the NonProfit Center continues to explore and invest in improved technologies with the hope of further reducing our building’s environmental impact.
